Dodgers News: Rich Hill Placed on IL, Matt Beaty Optioned to Triple-A

Dodgers’ starting pitcher Rich Hill was placed on the 10-day injured list with a forearm strain after being removed from last night’s game with forearm discomfort. In addition, infielder Matt Beaty was optioned to triple-A Oklahoma City while right-handed relievers J.T. Chargois and Josh Sborz were recalled.

After exiting the game, Hill underwent an ultrasound that showed no structural damage and said he believed it was just a sprain.

Per Dave Vassegh, the MRI results showed a flexor strain.

The expectation is that he will be shut down for 3-4 weeks before throwing again.

In 53 innings this season, Hill has pitched to a 2.55 ERA with 61 strikeouts. Ross Stripling will likely take over in the rotation.

Beaty was hitting .286/.310/.393 with an 88 wRC+ and one home run in 58 plate appearances. Optioning him for an extra reliever made sense after Hill only made it through one inning last night and since Joc Pederson has been practicing at first base.

Chargois has had some success in triple-A this season, posting a 2.17 ERA with 34 strikeouts and 14 walks in 29 innings. He did spend some time on the roster last season as he appeared in 39 games and pitched to a 3.34 ERA in 32 1/3 innings with an 11.13 K/9 and 4.18 BB/9.

He should work in a middle relief role and as a right-handed specialist.

Sborz has an inflated ERA in the minors mainly due to one bad game on April 25 where he allowed 6 runs and only retired one batter. He has also faced some bad luck, allowing a .424 BABIP (.300 is normal) and 54.2% left on base percentage (75% is normal).

Overall, he has been effective and could become a quality reliever for the Dodgers, potentially even a high leverage guy. In 29 1/3 innings at triple-A, he pitched to a 4.91 ERA but also had a 2.12 FIP with an 11.35 K/9, 1.53 BB/9, and 0.31 HR/9.

He was recalled earlier in the season but never entered a game.
