Dodgers: Hyun-Jin Ryu Dominates RISPY Business

There have been many editorials and talking heads discussing the incredibly year that Hyun-Jin Ryu is having. What he’s doing in 2019 is special. There are so many statistics to pick from, parse, and marvel at. Dodgers statistician and friend of Blue Heaven, Rick Krajewski, tweeted out an amazing one.

Clutch Much?

Ryu’s average against him with runners in scoring position is over 200 percentage points lower than league average. There are few adjectives that can describe how incredible that is. When there are runners on base, Hyun-Jin just seems to dial in his best.

Moreover, Ryu has allowed just a 1.74 ERA with runners in scoring position, meaning of the 20.2 innings he’s pitched where a runner was considered in scoring position, only 4 earned runs have scored. He has also recorded a strikeout 14 times, and allowed only 1 walk.

No Need To Overpower

Sometimes the pitchers with the filthiest velocity can rely on that too much in clutch situations. That’s not a knock against power pitchers–that is statistically probably always the right thing to do. Ryu doesn’t throw hard, and this probably works in his favor. All the adrenaline coursing through the veins of the batter, and Ryu throws un-hittable changeups, corner cutters, and anything to keep hitters off balance. Ryu’s sense of calm on the mound is clearly his greatest asset.

There’s no question in my mind that Hyun-Jin Ryu has absolute calm and ice in his veins, that allows him to keep cruising.
