Dodgers News: Hyun-jin Ryu is the Early Favorite For the Cy Young Award

Hyun-jin Ryu’s story has been one of the most entertaining in all of baseball during the 2019 season. The big southpaw from Incheon, South Korea is playing his sixth full season of Major League Baseball, and it’s shaping up to be his best year ever with the Dodgers. As of the most recent polls, Ryu leads baseball in Cy Young votes.

Ryu was off to a phenomenal start in his 2018 campaign before a groin injury derailed his season. He still managed to finish with a 1.97 ERA and a 1.008 WHIP to go along with a 7-3 record.

This year, Ryu is proving to be one of the most dominant pitchers in the game. He is 9-1 with a 1.27 ERA and 0.838 WHIP, tallying 90 strikeouts through 99 innings. He had a 32-inning scoreless inning streak at one point and has turned in 11 consecutive quality starts.

All of this is even crazier when you consider the fact the Ryu accepted a qualifying offer this past offseason for a meager $17.9 million. This comes just a few years after Ryu signed a relatively small, five-year contract with the Dodgers coming out of Korea.

Ryu truly has been everything the Dodgers could have imagined and more, and at an incredible price. Regardless of whether or not he takes home the award for Baseball’s best pitcher in 2019, Ryu will almost certainly receive a large contract when the season ends.
