Dodgers: Chris Taylor Talks About His Approach Against Robbie Ray

For the Los Angeles Dodgers, how great has Chris Taylor been lately? The answer is an emphatic ‘phenomenal’, and the numbers are there to support that. Indeed, since the injury to Corey Seager’s hamstring; Taylor has stepped up. His average is over the .400 mark since that day.

In last night’s hard-fought 3-2 Dodgers’ victory in Arizona, Taylor had the hit that drove in the game-winning run. Now, he talks with Alanna Rizzo of SportsNet LA on the approach he took against southpaw Robbie Ray.

For one, I always enjoy hearing a big league hitter’s mindset in terms of his approach in the batter’s box. It sounds like Taylor was trying to use the whole field against Ray.

“I was looking for a heater. You know, I wanted to try to stay the other way so I could stay on that slider as well, and I was able to stay on top of the heater as well.”

Of course, we all know that Taylor’s approach resulted in a line drive that went off the glove of Adam Jones in right field. It’s really nice to hear a guy trying to go to the opposite field, in a game that is becoming increasingly pull-happy. Remember – in that situation – the Dodgers just needed a hit rather than a ball that left the park.

Furthermore, the Dodgers sent out a lineup yesterday that was in a word; interesting. Still, the team philosophy of patience resides in more than just the usual starters. Taylor and company used this approach to wait out Ray, until a window opened to win the ballgame.

“We just did a good job of grinding him down. That’s something we take pride in – making a guy work. We weren’t able to put many runs on the board early, but we were able to make him throw a lot of pitches and make some mistakes.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers – and the sum of their parts – are so good right now. This is why they’re winning some games that they possibly shouldn’t. Because of this, they’re on a pace to win 110 ballgames in 2019.

You’re seeing something special unfold, and Taylor’s clutch hit to even the series in Arizona should be remembered.
