According to Mark Martell of Sports Illustrated, it would behoove the Dodgers to take a long look at left-hander Roenis Elias of the Seattle Mariners.
Here is a look at Elias’s numbers on Baseball Savant:
Elias is an underrated guy who had some solid prospect pedigree when he came up with the Mariners in 2014. He was traded to the Red Sox in 2016 and then returned to the Mariners once again in 2018.
Elias is under contract for a couple more seasons and considering his elite fastball spin, in the 91st percentile, he is probably a guy the Dodgers have already looked at and quite possibly are prioritizing.
The Mariners are a team who will most likely sell the few assets they do have at the deadline in two weeks.
Elias has picked up about a strikeout per inning (43 in 42 innings), a 4.07 ERA, and 4.16 SIERA. Lifetime, Elias has posted a 3.98 ERA and 4.48 DRA and has proven capable of both high-leverage work and long-relief work.
The Dodgers should be hunting for bigger fish and it seems they are, but Elias would not be the worst consolation prize at a cheap $910,000 price mixed in with the fact that he is a controllable 30-year-old lefty. All of those are needs with injuries to Tony Cingrani and Scott Alexander and the poor performance at the big league level of Caleb Ferguson.
