Dodgers: Cody Bellinger Called Most Complete Athlete Since Bo Jackson

As he often is (and rightfully so) Dodgers All-Star outfielder Cody Bellinger was a topic of conversation on the Jim Rome show. Rome was joined by DAZN analyst Tony Luftman who brought up Mike Trout as a player comparison, which we’ve heard a lot already this season.

Luftman on the Bellinger/Trout comparisons in 2019.

He sure seems like he is [approaching the level of Mike Trout] and he’s on this unbelievable arc. There was a gap in his swing that they were able to take advantage of in the World Series, and then last year they were afraid of lefty-lefty matchups.

I feel like the skies the limit for him — we see Mike Trout and his frame and his build and there’s no doubt he’s the best player in the world.

However, he also brought up a player comp you don’t hear very often these days. Bo Jackson.

I’ll share this about Cody Bellinger, a scout said since Bo Jackson left the major leagues, he was the best athlete anyone had ever seen at his time. Bellinger is the most complete athlete since then.

As a frame of comparison, if you’re mentioned in the same breath as that guy, that’s extraordinary.

If you don’t know Bo, Bo was good. Bo knew bo. Jackson played 8 seasons in bigs between 1986-1994 with the Royals, White Sox, and Angels. During his peak seasons – his healthy seasons – he hit 107 home runs over 486 games while playing hard-nosed defense in the outfield. During that time he also played in the NFL for the LA Raiders.

A dislocated hip sustained while playing football in 1991 derailed his athletic career, but he remains one of, if not the preeminent multi-sport star in history.

For Cody Bellinger to be mentioned along with Bo Jackson is a true testament to his athletic ability, and his ascension to the top of the baseball crop in 2019.
