MLB News: Farhan Zaidi Calls Writers Over Report of Giants ‘Selling’

Coincidentally, the San Francisco Giants are one of baseball’s most intriguing teams as baseball approaches the trade deadline. Sitting at 50-50 – in a year which will be Bruce Bochy’s final season as manager – everyone wants to know their status.

Recently, a report surfaced about Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi calling writer Jeff Passan. Passan wrote an article at ESPN saying the Giants were going to sell. Furthermore, the incident was detailed by Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow.

Moreover, Krukow says that the article written by Passan was inaccurate. Therefore, Zaidi was upset and said the following within earshot of Krukow.

“We don’t know what we’re gonna do right now. It depends on what (the Giants) do in the next 12 days. That’s what’s going to determine it. We don’t have a plan to sell. We have a plan to watch the team. I don’t believe in three-year plans or five-year plans. I believe in winning that year, and this team has come together. Why would I handicap this team that has put together a chemistry?”

Of course, the team coming together is subjective to some. The Giants remain 16 games out in the NL West, but just 2.5 back in the Wild Card race.

In regards to Madison Bumgarner being available – the Giants are refuting that part of any report as well.

“As far as Bumgarner’s concerned…(Passan) was talking about there was a deal a month ago with Bumgarner. (Zaidi) said, ‘That was completely false.’ He said, ‘That never ever came from our office and I have no idea where that came from.”

Finally, the article goes on to state that Bochy was instructed to tell his players that no sale would take place. Thus far, the Giants have stood pat in their model and no trades have been made.

The Dodger Connection

Many baseball pundits have pegged San Francisco as a seller for some time now. Bumgarner is a free agent at season’s end, and they currently hold several lucrative relief arms in their bullpen. With so many teams — including the Dodgers — in need of relief help, and the Giants needing to re-stock their minor league talent pool, the cards appeared to be laid out on the table.

But not to Farhan.

As we approach a crucial stretch in the trade deadline saga, it’s worth scoreboard watching the Giants each night to see what takes shape.
