Dodgers: Tony Gonsolin Speaks about First MLB Save in Potential Trade Showcase

Dodgers top prospect Tony Gonsolin earned his first big league on Tuesday night in Colorado. After the game, the right-hander spoke with SportsNet LA anchor Alanna Rizzo about the difference between his first MLB outing, and this one.

Result wise, definitely way better — I felt good. Definitely different coming out of the ‘pen, I haven’t done that in a while. I was just trying to attack guys and get strike one.

Of course, in his first game, Gonsolin was hurt by command issues, and some shoddy defense behind him. In that game, he pitched 4 innings while allowing 6 runs, 4 earned, in a loss to Arizona. In Colorado on Tuesday, he entered the game in the sixth inning and proceed to pitch 3 perfect innings before running into some trouble in the ninth inning.

All told, his line of 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, and 3 strikeouts was just what the team needed. And he did it at the not-so-pitcher friendly Coors Field. Rizzo asked Gonsolin about his stuff and how it worked in that park.

I tried not to think too much about where we’re at, and all that stuff. Just throwing sliders, throwing changeups, throwing fastballs – just letting the spin work. If I’m throwing it right, it’ll work.

Speculation surrounding Gonsolin and whether or not this was a showcase for a trade is out there but if he does stay in Los Angeles, this may be a glimpse into a potential role going forward.

It’s been great [his short time in the bullpen]. It’s good to see [Casey] Sadler throw – a guy I played with a little bit in OKC – and Shaggy [JT Chargois] and Ferg [Caleb Ferguson]. It’s good to be here and see all these guys and know that I’ve played with a few. It just makes it that much more comfortable.

When asked about potentially joining those bullpen mates for a period of time, Tony Smokes seemed on board, adding “it’s all about doing whatever I can to help the team while I’m up here.”

After throwing 49 pitches, Gonsolin may likely be returning to Triple-A OKC as the team plans to activate reliever Dylan Floro from the 10-day IL.
