Dodgers News: Rocky Gale Traded to the Tampa Bay Rays

Lost amongst the furry of the trade deadline on Wednesday was the news that the Dodgers have traded minor league catcher Rocky Gale to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations.

The Dodgers had recently designated Gale for assignment and was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City. With Keibert Ruiz and Austin Barnes splitting time there, Gale was expendable.

The organization raved about Gale’s ability to handle a pitching staff and his overall defensive ability and thus gave him a 40-man roster spot for half the season.

Gale accrued 17 plate appearances across two seasons with the Dodgers, collecting just two hits.

For his career, Rocky Gale holds a .108/.108/.189 slash line in 22 games. That slash line typically does not warrant a 40-man roster spot, especially with a contender like the Dodgers. With Will Smith and Russell Martin now manning the catcher spots on the 25-man roster, Gale’s path to a part-time role was murky.

Gale now moves on to the Tampa Bay Rays to possibly play alongside another short-time Dodger catcher in Travis d’Arnaud.
