Dodgers News: Alex Verdugo to IL, Tony Gonsolin Optioned

The Dodgers have placed outfielder Alex Verdugo (right oblique strain) on the 10-day injured list and demoted right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The club also announced that they have recalled left-handed pitcher Caleb Ferguson and corner infielder Edwin Rios from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Verdugo has been one of the best rookies in the league this season, posting a .294 batting average, 12 home runs, and a 114 wRC+. The 23-year-old also ranks amongst the best defensive outfielders in Major League Baseball. An oblique strain is not the best news and Dugie figures to be out until September.

Gonsolin, 25, is coming off his second career start in which he tossed 6 shutout innings, racking up 7 strikeouts. He figures to be back with the Dodgers very soon, although it is a bit of a disappointment that he has been sent down.

Ferguson, 23, has not lived up to expectations this season, posting an awful 5.88 ERA across 26 innings at the big league level. He has fared much better with Triple-A Oklahoma City, posting a 1.76 ERA across 15 1/3 innings of work.

Rios, 25, has been decent in limited time, posting a 140 wRC+ across 19 plate appearances. Small sample size, but Rios is capable of providing a solid defensive presence and a powerful left-handed bat.
