The Dodgers top two prospects, shortstop Gavin Lux and starting pitcher Dustin May share a competitive, yet friendly bond. The two stud prospects most likely are set to be teammates throughout the 2020s and figure to be a huge part of what the Dodgers hope is a championship year in 2019.
Pedro Moura of The Athletic recounts this special bond between the two in the column below:
Dustin May can be "an animal" on the mound, just like Rich Hill. The Dodgers could end up relying on May and his fierce competitiveness in a crucial role come October.

Both Dustin May and Gavin Lux were selected in the historic draft class for the franchise in 2016, with Lux heading to Los Angeles on a roughly $2.3 million signing bonus as the 20th overall pick and May receiving just short of a $1 million signing bonus as the third round selection. That draft class also included Dodgers’ starting catcher Will Smith, as well as top prospects Tony Gonsolin, DJ Peters, and Mitchell White — but Lux and May reign supreme and should continue to reign in the future.
According to the column, May looked at his promotion to the big leagues as something of a competition with Lux:
‘Oh, I’m gonna beat him [Lux] to the big leagues. I mean, it’s one of those things that I feel like it’s a competitive thing to see who’s gonna get there first.”
However Lux insisted that he never viewed their relationship as a competition, but gave credit to May for ‘beating him’ to the show:
“Obviously, he wanted to beat me. And he did.”
Lux on May
Lux also chimed in on what he envisioned for May’s future:
“When he starts landing his breaking ball, people aren’t gonna have a chance. “He’s gonna be as good as it gets.”
Let’s hope Gavin is right. It will not be long before they are teammates playing under the bright lights at Dodger Stadium.
The played in the Futures Game together. They were roommates together when the first started at AZL as 18-year-old kids. They were promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City together this season. Now, they will forever be linked in the same breath as each other — top prospects with common dreams and goals to win a World Series as members of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
