Dodgers Have Record-Setting Night in Gutting of Marlins

The Dodgers absolutely pummeled the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night by a score of 15-1. Rookie Dustin May tossed a fantastic game, throwing 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball. He struck out five. Outside of May shining, the Dodgers offense came alive in a big way and set numerous records in the process.

Rookie catcher Will Smith crushed two bombs, AJ Pollock went 3-for-3 with three doubles, and Justin Turner and Cody Bellinger both went yard. It was a night.

Will Smith Bests Cody Bellinger

Wow. When Cody Bellinger came onto the scene in 2017, there was talk about how some of the franchise records he was setting would remain for quite some time. That is no longer the case. Will Smith has crashed onto the scene even harder than Bellinger did two seasons ago which is saying something.

Alanna Rizzo of Sports Net LA tweeted this prior to Will Smith’s second home run of the night, so let’s update it. Smith now has 26 runs batted in, three above Cody Bellinger’s record and his nine home runs place him in sole possession of the record through 23 games.

What once was thought to be a record that would never be approached by a rookie anytime soon, Will Smith has done it.

Bellinger Matches Career High

Bellinger crushed a home run in Tuesday night’s affair and it tied his career high for home runs, set in 2017 with 39 total. He figures to blow right past that total in short order and could be on the verge of a 50 home run season.

Dodgers Set Extra Base Hit Record

The Dodgers crushed a whopping 13 extra base hits on Tuesday night, tying a record for the most in franchise history.

The Dodgers had a night to remember and while the Miami Marlins are not the most formidable opponent, the record-setting night was one for the ages. Russell Martin pitched, the rookies shined, and the offense looked like a well-oiled machine.
