Dodgers: Dustin May Potentially Transitioning to Bullpen

Manager Dave Roberts has stated that it is basically up in the air whether or not rookie Dustin May will make his next appearance for the Dodgers as a starter, according to Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group.

This is what Roberts had to say about May’s next start, courtesy of Plunkett:

“We haven’t made that decision yet. That’s kind of where we’re at right now. I do see him getting some time in the ‘pen. When that happens I can’t even really speak to that right now.”

This is an interesting development considering that Dustin May has been absolutely shoving on the mound in a starting capacity. Through three starts at the major league level, May holds a 2.63 ERA and has struck out 15 batters in 17 innings.

May remains the Dodgers’ top pitching prospect, but it appears possible that another top prospect in the organization, Tony Gonsolin, could be set up to make May’s next start.

This also could very well have something to do with the Dodgers playing a potential postseason opponent in the Atlanta Braves when May’s next start is scheduled. Tony Gonsolin started on Monday and should be ready to go if the Dodgers need him to make the start. Showing May to Atlanta just two months before they would be set to play them might not be the smartest move.

At this point, the Dodgers appear to be mixing and matching rather than being set in their ways. This is a good thing. Seeing the versatility of guys like Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin is an integral part of building out the postseason roster in a little over a month.

Don’t be discouraged. May figures to play a vital role in October, regardless of how he is deployed.
