The Dodgers lose 13-7 against the Marlins in the series finale in Miami. It was a rough day on the mound for Walker Buehler as he gave up 5 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in 4+ innings of work while suffering his third loss of the season.
Following the loss, manager Dave Roberts was asked about Buehler’s performance, and his home-road split:
“He pitches really well at home. I just don’t think that today, regardless of where he pitched, it would have been much different, really.”
On that note, the narrative is starting to build about Walker’s struggles on the road.
#Dodgers Walker Buehler in 2019:
11 starts at home — 2.33 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, .196 BA against
12 starts on road — 4.37 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, .254 BA against
Similar splits in 2018— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) August 15, 2019
Bill Plunkett of the OC Register pointed this during the game today, and asked the Dodgers manager his thoughts on Buehler’s road issues
“I know he’s comfortable at home, but essentially half your starts have to come on the road. If there is something to it, we got to dig in on it, but I know Walker is not going to make excuses about home vs. road, but the numbers are real, they don’t lie. But, if that’s the case, we got to figure something out, but right now, I don’t have an answer to that.”
Offensive Attack
Dodgers pitching aside, the offense still was able to put up 7 runs on 7 hits, led by Cody Bellinger’s 40th home run of the season. Doc touched on the offensive approach.
“I thought the score didn’t dictate how we approached our at-bats, there were just some really good at-bats, and even there starter, Smith, who’s probably there ace, to get him out after 5 because of the pitch count, I thought that we grinded him, and got to there bullpen, so offensively, collectively, very good today, and I expect we’ll take it into the Atlanta series.”
Los Angeles will look to leave this loss behind them, focusing on the positive of winning this series, and the tough matchup against the Braves in Atlanta.
