The Dodgers announced that Dustin May will start against the San Diego Padres on Monday. This comes after short layoff following a rough relief outing in Atlanta last weekend, which may have caused Los Angeles to alter its plan a bit.

In 4 appearances this season, May holds a 4.26 ERA across 19 innings of work. In each outing as a starter, the remarkably consistent May has pitched exactly 5.2 innings while recording a 2.65 ERA. However, in his lone relief appearance, he served up a grand slam in Atlanta.
While May could end up a relief option for the playoffs, he will be given another opportunity as a starter on Monday night in San Diego before moving back to the bullpen, according to Dave Roberts.
With Dustin [May], he is going to have a little bit of a layoff. He’s going to make a start here…we have him penciled in. He’s going to make another bullpen here in a couple days. It’s more for him to see hitters, be a little more aggressive against a right-handed hitter, and use his mix.
Code Red is now sitting at 125.2 innings pitched between LA and the minor leagues in 2019, so the bullpen also acts as a good opportunity to keep innings down for the 21 year-old.
May made his MLB debut against the Padres at Dodger Stadium earlier this month where he gave up 9 hits and 3 earned runs in a loss. He will look to bounce back from his most recent outing as a reliever, and balance his win/loss record at 2 apiece.
