Dodgers: Gerardo Carrillo Flashing Triple-Digits at Arizona Fall League

It seems like every season we talk about the potential of some Dodgers’ pitcher on the farm. This season, it might be the rise of right-handed pitcher Gerardo Carrillo.

The 21-year-old Carrillo, hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, has been playing affiliated ball with the Dodgers organization since 2017. In 2017, he got off to a strong start, posting a 2.79 ERA across 48 1/3 innings of work. However, strikeouts were an issue as he averaged just 5.96 of them per nine innings. In 2018, Carrillo really broke out, posting a 1.50 ERA across 50 innings of work at two levels. His strikeout numbers increase to 7.5 per nine innings.

Now, at the Arizona Fall League, Carrillo is bringing the heat and has that stats to show for it. He was named as a top performer from AFL action this week.

Carrillo issued three walks and gave up three hits, but was able to consistently work his way out of trouble to spin four scoreless innings for Glendale. Carrillo, who hasn’t given up a run in three straight AFL appearances, struck out four and induced a pair of ground-ball double plays to keep runs off the board. Carillo pitched to a 2.22 ERA in the AFL after posting a 5.44 mark with Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga during the regular season.

He is currently ranked as the Dodgers’ 22nd-best prospect, a testament to their immense minor league depth.

With the heat coming out to play in 2019, his strikeouts jumped to 9 per nine innings, but his walk rate nearly doubled from 7.2% to 12.6%. This typically happens with prospects who gain a new skill and in this case, Carrillo’s is to throw gas.
