Dodgers: MLB Pundit Calls Corey Seager a Must-Extend Player for Los Angeles

Corey Seager found a way to make Dodgers fans nervous about being in his final year of arbitration. Up until the 2020 season, most fans in Los Angeles were fairly certain a small or short-term deal would’ve been done by now. Instead, the World Series MVP has just the 2021 season left until entering free agency.

Seager quickly became one of the Dodgers’ most important priorities following his 2020 postseason performance. In fact, Jim Bowden of The Atheltic named Seager the “Must Extend” player in Los Angeles. More on Seager from Bowden:

Seager was the 2020 NLCS and World Series MVP, with 7 home runs and 16 RBIs in 13 games…He finished 9th in the NL MVP voting this year. He’s only 26 years old, which means an 8-year contract extension is what should be expected this offseason.

Seager is coming off of a season in which he slashed .307/.358/.585 and had 28 extra-base hits in 52 games. It just so happens that Seager also ended up having one of the most productive offensive years of his career, just 2 years removed from a few major surgeries. Without his production, there is no way the Dodger go 43-17 and win the World Series in 2020.

With that in mind, the only thing left to discuss is the length and terms of his new contract. The Dodgers would presumably like to keep him around long-term, but an 8-year extension that Bowden suggested might be a little long. That length would keep him in Los Angeles through the 2029 season, which would make him a free agent in his mid-30s.

Instead, a deal that would keep Seager on the Dodgers through 2027 might be more ideal. A 6-year extension could be just what the team ordered, possibly with an annual average somewhere around the $25 million mark. Expect the Dodgers to be in on Seager for roughly $150 million if the years are right. Don’t forget, Seager is a client of Scott Boras.
