Dodgers Fan’s Annual Bracket Raises Money For A Good Cause

It started as a lark back in 2018. Makenna Martin, then a high school student in Southern California, made a March Madness-style bracket to determine which Dodgers player was the hottest.

Now, Makenna is in college, and the fifth annual Hottest Dodger Bracket has been released. You’ve probably never asked yourself, “Who do I find hotter, Evan Phillips or Max Muncy?” Well, now you can!

And for the second straight year, this silly game is helping to raise money for a really good cause. This year’s cause is “Peace Over Violence,” a nonprofit dedicated to “building healthy relationships, families and communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence.”

Okay, with all the important stuff out of the way, let’s talk about the silliness. There are two dynamics at play here. First, everyone has different taste, so while it might be easy for me to say, “I love you, Justin Turner, but you’re not getting out of the first round no matter who you’re up against,” someone else — like, say, my wife, hypothetically — might have a deep love for JT that allows her to overcome his lack of traditional handsomeness. (That same mindset is why she married me, so I don’t complain too much.)

The second dynamic is the seeding, which is somewhat related to the differing tastes. Makenna gets some input from others, but ultimately, the seeding in the bracket comes down to her own personal tastes, which makes for some challenging first-round matchups. My 17-year-old daughter, for example, was not thrilled at having to choose between Trea Turner and Miguel Vargas so early in the process; for me, it was Brusdar Graterol against Gavin Lux.

But whatever your tastes, go check out the bracket. If you don’t feel comfortable voting on who’s “hotter,” pretend the vote is for “who I’d like to have a beer with” or “who I think makes the best Mexican food.” Whatever your definition, have some fun with it and donate to a very good cause for a chance to win some nice prizes.
