Dodgers News: Treinen and May Take Next Steps With Big Postseason Roster Implications

With Tony Gonsolin and Yency Almonte both back from the injured list in the past week, the Dodgers are down to two potential playoff pitchers currently hanging out on the IL: Blake Treinen and Dustin May.

Before Tuesday’s game, L.A. manager Dave Roberts gave an update on both big righties.

That’s a big day for simulated games, and the health of Treinen and May will have big implications on the postseason roster.

Right now, there are six relievers who are essentially locks for the 13-man NLDS pitching staff: Evan Phillips, Yency Almonte, Chris Martin, Alex Vesia, Tommy Kahnle, and Brusdar Graterol. Treinen would be added to that list if he’s healthy and ready to go.

Los Angeles has five starting pitchers who appear to be locks for the postseason, even though only four will be acting as starters: Julio Urias, Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Anderson, Tony Gonsolin, and Andrew Heaney. May would presumably be added to that list, but Roberts said on Tuesday May’s spot on the roster isn’t guaranteed.

Some of that is simply because there are a lot of pitchers who can make a case for a spot on the roster. In addition to the seven relievers listed above, you have Caleb Ferguson and David Price, two options if they feel like they need another lefty in the bullpen, and Craig Kimbrel, who is Craig Kimbrel, for better and for worse.

During Tuesday night’s game, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman joined Joe Davis and Orel Hershiser in the broadcast booth, and he said this year’s playoff pitching staff “has the potential to be the deepest staff, one through thirteen, that we’ve ever had. … Everyone is kind of trending in the right direction for us to be able to put together a really complete staff.”

We’ll have a lot better idea where things stand with May and Treinen after Wednesday’s sim games, so the pitching staff will come together soon.
