Dodgers pitchers Dustin May and Blake Treinen have both been working their way back from the injured list, hoping to make their way back in time for the NLDS. L.A. manager Dave Roberts has said all along that if Treinen got healthy, he’d be on the roster. But last week, Roberts started hinting that May might not be on the NLDS roster even if he was healthy.
On Monday, Roberts reiterated the same news for both pitchers, giving more information on why May might not be on the roster.

One thing the Dodgers learned in 2020 is that it’s easy for a pitcher to get rusty in the Division Series if you end up not needing him. By the time Tony Gonsolin pitched in the NLCS that season, it had been 17 days since he’d pitched in a game, and the rust showed. They might have that in mind with May, preferring to have him spend the next week throwing a couple more simulated games so they can control his innings and get him built up for a possible spot on the NLCS roster.
If May isn’t on the roster, that opens up a spot for one of Craig Kimbrel, David Price, or Caleb Ferguson, depending on what the powers that be determine to be their biggest needs. All three of those guys come with their own weaknesses, but they don’t have the same workload concerns as May, so they might make more sense for the Division Series roster.
