Dodgers News: Dustin May Gets Solid Raise, Avoids Arbitration

With Friday’s deadline for teams to exchange salary figures for their arbitration-eligible players, a slew of players around the league agreed to deals with their teams for 2023. That includes several of the 10 Dodgers who were eligible for arbitration.

One of those is Dustin May, who avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal with Los Angeles.

May’s final number is a little above some projections and a little below others. Spotrac had him projected for $2,119,550, and I like to use Spotrac because it tracks every dollar and gives us an actual estimate on L.A.’s luxury tax number for 2023. The difference between Spotrac’s projection and May’s actual number is $444,550, a significant number as they try to inch their way down below the luxury tax threshold.

May was starting to turn into the star pitcher we’ve been hoping for when an elbow injury ended his 2021 season in his fifth start of the year on May 1. The big righty had Tommy John surgery, returning late in the 2022 season to make six starts. Those starts were hit-and-miss, and he went back on the injured list with a lower back issue late in the season. May was on the NLDS roster for the Dodgers but didn’t appear in the series.

With three years and 59 days of MLB service time, this was May’s first time eligible for arbitration, so it’s a good payday for him that represents more than a 100% raise from the $730,000 he made last year. If he can stay healthy, he’s going to make a lot more money in his career.
