Dodgers Prospect Diego Cartaya Has His Own Special Dietitian

Catcher Diego Cartaya is the top prospect in a loaded Dodgers farm system. The 6-foot-3 backstop has pounded the ball in the minors and looks to make his mark in Double-A and possibly even Triple-A in 2023. Between Will Smith, Cartaya, and Dalton Rushing, the present and the future look bright behind the plate for Los Angeles.

Cartaya recently sat down with Doug McKain in the Dodgers Nation offices and had a conversation about everything from baseball to family to growing up in Venezuela.

Cartaya has had some injury issues in the minors, and Doug asked him what the key is to staying healthy. His answer was enlightening.

“Well, I started eating better. Keep up with my exercise, stretches, all that, recovery after the game. I think that’s the big thing.”

Earlier in the interview, we got a feel for where that nutrition and exercise mindset comes from. Cartaya’s mother is a former bodybuilder and was the physical trainer at a baseball academy in Venezuela. Doug asked Diego what impact his mom has on him.

“A lot. A lot. She still helps me a lot. She always tells me what to eat, what I cannot eat. And she’s always on me with that, like training, always helping me, so I’m blessed that I have her.”

Even when you’re a top-10 prospect in baseball and the Dodgers’ number-one prospect, you still can’t overlook the importance of a good mom.
